The Vocation of Holy Preaching
This page explores the Vocation to all branches of the Dominican Family through the life of St. Dominic, also looking at Discernment, the International Dominican Youth Movement, Dominican International Sisters and the International Dominican Family websites.
Under Palazzo Valentini, in Rome, archaeologists have discovered the ravishing remains of the homes of wealthy Romans of imperial times; among much else, these include mosaic floors, in which each tiny individual tile contributes to the overall effect. If even one is missing, or out of place, the pattern is flawed.
Our Dominican Family is rather like that: every individual member is a crucial part of the whole, yet paradoxically no individual is important except in relation to all the others. We have friars (ordained priests and co-operator brothers), contemplative nuns, laity, Sisters in apostolic life, the Youth Movement, the international volunteers: each of us has a place in the Family, and each of us has a contribution to make. Like the tiles in a mosaic, we fit into our individual places and so form a harmonious picture. By Ms. Ruth Anne Henderson, O.P.
The Church and the Successor of the Apostle Peter look to the Order of Preachers (Dominican Family) with no less hope and confidence than at the time of your foundation. The needs of the new evangelization are great; and it is certain that your Order, with its many vocations and outstanding heritage, must play a vital part in the Church's mission to overturn the old untruths and proclaim the message of Christ effectively at the dawn of the new millennium.

Discernment of a Vocation

To further know and understand who we are as a Family, is to discover who our founder St. Dominic De Guzman, O.P., was in the life of the Church. This will help you discern your vocation to the Dominican Family.
If you feel having read his story a call to Dominican life contact the nearest Dominican entity to you or www.op.org to know the community closest to you and the Contemplative Nuns.
In discernment, individuals and groups allow the experiences of a dynamic relationship with the Living God to give shape to their decisions, seeking to judge between choices that are obedient to God's will and those that are contrary to God's desires. It is often associated with the call of God to a particular person or group.
Discernment is an ongoing process rather than an isolated event and is grounded in a life of prayer. It makes use of rational processes, intuition, imagination, and emotion, and always includes the testing of a discerned decision.
